Caring for Your New Wood Deck

While there are low- and no-maintenance deck options available, some people simply prefer the look and affordability of real wood decks. With proper care, your new wood deck can remain functional and beautiful for years to come

New Decks

Once your deck has had a couple of months to age and settle, it’s a good idea to have it professionally cleaned to remove any mildew and surface impurities before sealing it with a waterproof sealant. Sealing your deck guards against sun damage, which dries out the wood, and from the moisture damage that snow, rain and dew can cause. Seasonal freeze and thaw cycles will cause unsealed wood to warp, crack and become discolored. Even pressure treated decks must be sealed.

Grease and Dirt

We strongly encourage you to invest in a grill mat and make sure your grill has a grease catcher in place to protect your deck from grease spills, because they are notoriously difficult to remove. Never set potted plants directly on the deck’s surface as the will trap dirt and moisture beneath them and leave marks or cause mold growth. Instead, set planters on concrete blocks.

Sweep and Shovel

You’ll want to keep your deck swept free of dirt and leaves that can leave marks and encourage mold growth. Also, remove accumulated snow as quickly as possible. Not only can it cause damage as it melts, but snow is very heavy.

Clean and Seal

If you plan to clean and seal your deck on your own, we suggest you do it annually. Professional cleaning and sealing contractors use equipment and products that will help your deck’s finish last for 2-3 years before having to be redone, making it an affordable option.

Repairs

Making repairs as soon as you notice the need for them is key in maintaining the integrity of your deck. Immediately replace any loose or rotting floor boards, and check your railing often to see that it is secure.
